Awareness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) rose dramatically in the early 1990s when the first few UFC fights were won by a relatively small and unassuming BJJ athlete called Royce Gracie. Ever since then BJJ has grown rapidly and we at Gracie Barra Newmarket are proud to be part of the largest academy with over 800 schools worldwide.
With roots in the Japanese art of Judo, there are many similarities but it is the superior ground fighting game that really sets BJJ apart. A typical session consists of a warmup, followed by some takedown drills, and then ground technique drills. Towards the end of the session we usually practice the techniques we learned with a little more resistance offered by your training partner. We work hard to ensure that all newcomers have a good first experience with us – you’re not left to fend for yourself and we all remember what those first few weeks were like!
